Solar Dyeing with Lael Chmelyk

  • Alberta Craft Gallery + Shop - Calgary cSPACE Marada Loop 280, 1721 29 AVE SW Calgary, AB T2T 6T7 Canada (map)

Tickets: General Admission $50 | ACC Members $40

This workshop will be an introduction to solar dyeing using foraged plants, kitchen scraps and fabric remnants. We will discuss responsible and ethical harvesting for natural dyes, as well as fabric preparation including scouring and mordanting. Participants are encouraged to bring glass jars (1 L or more) in which to dye, as well as any dye stuffs you are curious to try (marigolds, onion skins, hibiscus, cosmos, dandelions, etc.).

During the 2.5 hour workshop, we will spark your curiosity as well as give you the tools to continue this experimentation all year long, using only the power of the sun to apply colour to cloth/yarn in natural materials of cotton/linen/silk/ wool. Once you try this technique, everything has the potential to become dye - from your compost to spent blooms.

A bit about your Instructor:

Lael is a ceramic artists and quilter who explores ideas of ceremony, rituals, and womanhood through functional craft mediums. Lael was raised in Dawson Creek, BC, and now lives in Calgary, AB. She began making from an early age, joining a long line of obsessive craftspeople. She earned a BFA in Ceramics from Alberta University of the Arts in 2020. Using the lens of craft, her work is a catalyst to larger conversations of how we seek comfort in rituals and how we navigate our lives as modern women.
