Weave a Fruit Basket with Maryann Borch - Al Fresco Summer Series

  • Al Fresco 10150 104 St NW Edmonton Canada (map)

Tickets: Free, registration is required.

In this workshop you will learn how to use wood and soaked willow to make a small round basket. The base will be constructed using a wood cookie with pre-drilled holes for the rods to form the uprights in the basket. We will then weave the sides using willow and turn down a border. Handles can be incorporated if desired. All materials are locally sourced and completely compostable. The ancient craft of basket weaving is not only sustainable but also has resisted industrial mechanization. Please bring sharp pruning shears.

Weaving materials will be provided. There will be a small number of pruning shears available. If you have your own favourite sharp shears, we highly recommend you bring them with you.

This event is suitable for ages 14+. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

This programming is brought to you by Alberta Craft Gallery + Shop in partnership with the Edmonton Downtown Business Association. Each week from July 8-September 9, Alberta Craft will be hosting free public programming at Al Fresco from 1-3pm. Registration is required.

About your instructor:

Maryann Borch has been making Baskets for over 20 years. She first learned from her Mentor Rae Hunter and went on to study in Denmark, England and Washington. She uses predominantly native willows for teaching as they are abundant and regenerative, not to mention thrive when coppiced. The functionality of these woven baskets was the first impetus, but as she continues, more art and design are also weaving their way into the baskets. She has been teaching classes in person at Good Note Community Farm and various municipalities and art organizations as well as online for 15 years. She started the community led Facebook group called Alberta Natural Baskets, now with over 1.8 K members. She also organized the first ever Basketry Retreat in Alberta last winter. She is in the process of starting a non- profit organization: Alberta Basketry Guild.
