Patterns with Natural Dyes; Printing Mordants with Lael Chmelyk

  • Alberta Craft Council 10186- 106 Street Edmonton, AB, T5J 1H4 Canada (map)

In this workshop, we will be exploring application of mordants onto cloth with fibre and ceramic artist Lael Chmelyk. Mordants are the ‘glue’ that bind natural dyes to fibers. Using direct application, we will stamp, paint and print various mordants onto bandanas, then dye the cloth to reveal many shades of colour from one dye pot.

All materials will be supplied including 2 cotton bandanas to dye, and 4 natural dye colours to choose from; logwood, cochineal, pomegranate, and marigold.

The workshop will take place at the Alberta Craft Discovery Gallery where you will be able to draw inspiration from Lael’s solo exhibition Haptic Rituals Exploring ideas of femininity and ideas of otherhood through quilting and natural dyeing. By translating concepts of the female body as a vessel through a matrilineal craft, Chmelyk questions the status quo of what a woman’s life should look like.

No experience necessary. Please note that the Alberta Craft Council – Edmonton is not wheelchair accessible.
