In this welcoming workshop you will learn how to read a simple crochet pattern and make your own square dish cloth or face scrubbie.
Kasie, an experienced instructor, and successful exhibiting fibre artist, began crocheting with her mother and has passed on the skill with her daughter who will also be on hand to assist. Join them in learning this versatile and creative heritage skill.
Minimum age is 12. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
All materials will be provided though of course you are welcome to bring your own yarn and needles if you prefer.
This programming is brought to you by Alberta Craft Gallery + Shop in partnership with the Edmonton Downtown Business Association. Each week from July 8-September 9, Alberta Craft will be hosting free public programming at Al Fresco from 1-3pm. Registration is required.
About your instructor
“My work is simultaneously an homage to the largely female-dominated handcrafting tradition of crochet that my late mum handed down to myself and my daughter, and an exploration of socially constructed expectations of femininity and matrilineality. My work is conceptualized from the body— insides and out—consists of oversized sculptures and (mis)conceptions relating to topics of femininity, motherhood, womanhood, and the body. Handwoven materials bring forth a sense of nostalgia and sentimentality, and inherently suggest a longstanding tradition of women-makers, but with a nightmarish twist. Fibre objects that initially recall domesticity, craftwork, and femininity, are turned into an abject experience that destabilizes the expectations of feminine bodies, and conveys the artists’ messages.”
