Have you ever wanted to visit the Leighton Art Centre? Join the Alberta Craft Council for a private tour of the museum!

We will start the afternoon with a guided tour/talk of Where Do We Stand? , an exhibition of sculpture and two-dimensional works by artist Neshka Krusche. Neshka finds the driftwood (mostly cedar and fir) on the West Coast and brings it back to her studio in the Alberta Foothills, not far from Leighton Art Centre. There, the wood is completely transformed to take on a new, sharp, thought-provoking presence. The long process of carving, charring and oiling the sculptures is an exploration of the process of change. First the wood needs to adapt to the dry and cold climate of Alberta, then it is slowly transformed to the minimal and tranquil forms that the sculptures eventually take.

Lindsay Corbet, Manager, Exhibitions, Events & Volunteers will give us a tour of the Museum paying particular attention to the textiles of Barbara Leighton. The Leighton house is a provincially designated Historic Resource; this unique Arts and Crafts inspired home was designed by A.C. Leighton in the 1950s and boasts some of the most breathtaking mountain views in Southern Alberta. Lindsay will also take us on a guided tour of the grounds around the Leighton Art Centre, so bring your camera because the views don’t disappoint! They are the proud stewards of 80 acres of natural foothills grasslands, featuring spectacular Foothills and Rocky Mountain views and supporting numerous local flora and fauna.

GETTING HERE

Leighton Art Centre is located in the rolling foothills of southern Alberta, about 45 minute drive from downtown Calgary. While most of the roads leading to Leighton Art Centre are paved, our driveway is gravel and our parking areas are a combination of gravel and mowed grass (or plowed snow over grass, in the winter). There is room for several cars to park at the top of our driveway, to the left of our main building, including two designated accessible parking spaces.

ACCESSIBILITY

The Leightons’ historic home, which houses the Gallery, Museum and Gallery Shop, was built in the 1950s and contains three single steps up/down within its public areas.

Ticket sales will end on August 20, 2021, at 10am MDT.
