Procession of the Self is an exhibition by 2022 Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics winner Matthew O’Reilly. Developed during his year-long residency at the Medalta Clay Center in Medicine Hat, the exhibition uses the sculpted figure as a launch pad for conversation about the human condition. Through the iterative making and exhibiting process, Matthew's work has evolved from gallery-white, distorted public statuary, to richly expressive towering figures, and his work continues to develop. With one foot in the auto-biographical, and one foot in the anthropological, each piece captures a personal narrative while simultaneously being a larger cultural time capsule.
