Glass Artists Featured in Tour of Alberta

Darren J PetersenThe inaugural Tour of Alberta marked Canada’s first major international professional stage race, and the Province’s first foray into the growing global sport of cycling.   The Tour of Alberta was a six-stage race, starting in Edmonton on September 3 and ending in Calgary on Sunday, September 8, with stage routes traveling throughout rural Alberta, villages, towns and small cities. The event included more than 50 communities of various sizes, traversing more than 850 kilometres, making it one of Canada’s most unique and most spanning sporting events.

A large sculpture by Darren J Petersen (Red Deer) was purchased at the Alberta Craft Council Gallery & Shop will be presented as the trophy for the event.  This trophy, engraved with the winner’s name, will remain with the tour organizers with names of future winners added each year.  The winner will also be presented with a smaller version created by Darren to commemorate the victory.

Darren Petersen has been creating blown glass for over 20 years at his Sparrows Glassworks studio in Red Deer. He received a BFA in glass from the Alberta College of Art + Design and has exhibited work across North America as well as in Germany and South Korea. Darren’s work is well represented in the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and in private collections worldwide.
