Ceramic artists, illustrators, and graphic designers from across Canada have been recruited to design for an innovative new venture, Redesigned Medalta. It has been almost 60 years since Medalta was an active manufacturer producing new designs, and now as a growing museum, artists residency centre and innovative not for profit, Medalta is producing new limited edition designs with a contemporary edge. Using the latest digital tools to produce the ultimate in analog ceramics, we have asked this diverse group to produce limited edition designs for our small plate series.
These plates began their life cycle sometime between 1950 -1979 at Hycroft China in Medicine Hat, Alberta. After being diverted from the waste stream and stored in the Medalta warehouse for many years, they now have a new life as a re-designed and re-packaged digitally altered example of Canadian design. The unique marks on these plates are evidence of its manufacturing process, a process that begins and ends with the aid of skilled hands. Think of the unique sound of a record, the unmistakable quality of aged wood or smile lines as we get older. Not unlike Medalta itself, some things become better with age.
Participating artists include: ACC Members Jenn Demke Lange (Medicine Hat, AB), Elisabeth Burritt (Medicine Hat, AB), Laura McKibbon, Aaron Nelson (Medicine Hat, AB), Jenna Stanton (Medicine Hat, AB) and more.
