Joan Irvin
Joan Irvin is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, writer, and curator. She teaches Jewellery + Metals at the Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD), and has exhibited her metal and mixed media works in Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Asia. A graduate of Fine Arts from both the University of Calgary (Ceramics), and ACAD (Jewellery + Metals), Joan additionally informed her practice through two years in the Banff Centre’s Winter Cycle Program, an enamelling course at Penland School of Crafts, and work with a Calgary goldsmith. She has received numerous awards, including the Alberta Craft Council’s 2009 Award of Honour.
Fine Silver Clay: The Basics

Model with “clay,” and end up with a fine silver object! Get the basics of working with this innovative material and construct flat and hollow forms, produce pieces using your own “custom made” press moulds, try additional forming methods, and experiment with a variety of “implants” (synthetic stones, china shards, silver wire, etc.). Learn about the different types of metal clay, their most suitable applications, and their particular sintering/firing requirements. Finishing techniques and surface enhancement options will also be covered, including an introduction to oxidizing, detailing with 24k gold (keumbo technique), and torching fired enamels. Sign up!
