Our Pine
Tapestry

My weaving is not often practical, although I have woven coats and dresses just to prove I could but I like the medium of tapestry for abstract expression. I really enjoy doing large tapestries but they do require many hours and I am not a particularly patient person.

I have tried various techniques with my hangings - rifa, Moorman, etc., but found the traditional tapestry technique where the warp is entirely covered to be the most reliable. I usually work in rectangles or squares but like to experiment too.

The tapestry Our Pine was a bit boring when finished so though I'd add dye to some lower areas - disastrous idea but exciting results when I made an irregular shape of the tree trunk.

Sometimes I use embroidery stitches on top of tapestry to give glitter or accent a line. Some works are mostly tapestry with some three dimensional accents of loops or rifa. In modern tapestry work nothing is "wrong" if it works. I find you are never too old to learn new things and often you learn from the people you teach.

I have found that being involved in arts as well as crafts organizations has inspired me to look further than my own back yard.
